The Disease Control Department is warning the public about the spread of dengue fever, saying that more than 27,000 people have been infected, with 33 reported deaths, in the past six months.
According to Dr Tares Krassanairawiwong, director general of the department, from January 1 to June 28 this year, 27,377 people were infected with the dengue fever, most of them aged between 5 and 14, followed by those aged between 15 and 24.
Most infections were reported in the south, Bangkok and the central region.
The director general said that, in June, 1,500-2,400 patients were recorded per week.
The doctor asked the public to monitor the health of people in their family. If they develop a sudden high fever, which lasts for more than two days, they should see a doctor immediately.
He advised against self-prescribing medication, especially non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which could have very serious effects.
People should eliminate mosquito breeding places in their property, such as by cleaning the house and covering or removing stagnant water.
He added that the department has a Dengue Rapid Diagnosis Test, which will help reduce the number of people dying from dengue fever.
